چکیده

The spotted lanternfly is an invasive pest for which we lack individual movement data due in part to the difficulty posed by identification. We developed a computer‐aided method identify adult using wing spot patterns from photos processed software I3S and demonstrated method’s accuracy with lab field validations. Based on 176 individuals lab, showed that digitizing spots of one allowed 100% reliable errors user input variation angle image were largely negligible compared inter-individual variations. applied this context mark-recapture experiment assess feasibility field. initially identified total 84 unique lanternflies, 31 recaptured after four hours along 49 new individuals. established analysis recaptures can possibly be automated based scores may not require systematic visual pairwise comparison. demonstration effectiveness relatively small sample sizes makes it promising tool experimentation as well manipulations. Once validated larger datasets different contexts, will provide ample opportunity collect useful ecology greatly inform management.

Structure and Sensilla of the Mouthparts of the Spotted Lanternfly Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Fulgoridae), a Polyphagous Invasive Planthopper

Mouthparts are among the most important sensory and feeding structures in insects and comparative morphological study may help explain differences in feeding behavior and diet breadth among species. The spotted lanternfly Lycorma delicatula (White) (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Fulgoridae) is a polyphagous agricultural pest originating in China, recently established and becoming widespread in Kore...

Validation of photo-identification as a mark-recapture method in the spotted eagle ray Aetobatus narinari.

The spotted eagle ray Aetobatus narinari is characterized by pigmentation patterns that are retained for up to 3·5 years. These pigmentations can be used to identify individuals through photo-identification. Only one study has validated this technique, but no study has estimated the percentage of correct identification of the rays using this technique. In order to carry out demographic research...

An Old Remedy for a New Problem? Identification of Ooencyrtus kuvanae (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), an Egg Parasitoid of Lycorma delicatula (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) in North America

Spotted Lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula (White) is a recently introduced pest of Tree-of-Heaven, Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle in North America. Natural enemy surveys for this pest in Pennsylvania in 2016 recovered an encyrtid egg parasitoid from both field collections and laboratory rearing of field-collected L. delicatula egg masses. Both molecular and morphological data confirm that the...

A computer-assisted system for photographic mark–recapture analysis

1. Photographic mark–recapture is a cost-effective, non-invasive way to study populations. However, to efficiently apply photographic mark–recapture to large populations, computer software is needed for imagemanipulation and patternmatching. 2. We created an open-source application for the storage, pattern extraction and pattern matching of digital images for the purposes of mark–recapture anal...
